Former Mayor of Stellarton Clarence Porter has passed away.

Clarence Porter

Porter served nine years as mayor from Nov. 1988 to Oct. 1997.

Current mayor Joe Gennoe never served on council at the same time as Porter, but knew him most of his life as his parents were friends with the Porters.

“He was a mentor of mine,” Gennoe said. “He was a hardworking, good honest man.”

Aside from serving on council, Porter was known for his family’s lumber and building supply business, D. Porter and Son Ltd.

Town Clerk Joyce Eaton said during his term on council, the town celebrated it’s 100th anniversary and Porter was one of the one’s instrumental in the founding of the annual Homecoming festival which was held this weekend.
