NEW GLASGOW – Convergys will be closing its doors for good earlier than anticipated this year.
Company spokeswoman Brooke Beiting confirmed Thursday that the company that currently employs 194 full time staff in New Glasgow will begin laying off employees as early as May 29 with the final closure on Aug. 28.
“This is a continuation of our announcement made in 2014 that the New Glasgow site would be closing,” she said. “Today we announced to the employees that the New Glasgow contact centre would be closing in August.”
Convergys announced in June 2014 that the site would close in September 2014 but a contract with the company was extended and it said it would stay open through to the end of 2015.
During the first announcement, 300 people were working at the centre, but after this announcement, many employees found other work opportunities outside of the company.
Beiting said 75 employees will be laid off in May and the rest will be out of a job in August.
However, she said, employees in good standing are encouraged to apply at other Convergys contact centres and employment placement counselling will be made available as well.
She added that there will be no more contract extensions for this centre.
“This is the final one (closure),” Beiting said.
A Convergys employee, who asked not be identified, said the employees were told as a group that the centre would be closing in August.
“We were expecting it, but not this soon,” she said.
She added that she will miss the people she works with and hopes to find work in the future, but doesn’t have anything lined up at the moment.
According to a company website, Convergys is a global leader in customer management and generated $764 million in revenue at the end of 2014 which was up 45 per cent compared to 2013.
In January 2014, it acquired Stream Global Services Inc. Convergys has more than 150 locations around the world in 31 different countries. It employs 125,000 people. The company leases the building where it houses its New Glasgow operations.
