Gerald Rushton, 47, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Elizabeth MacPherson, 54, and Brittany MacPherson, 24.

Spokesman Cpl. Scott MacRae says police were called to the residence in the 400 block of Pictou Road around 3 p.m.

They discovered the first woman when they arrived, and MacRae said a man with “serious wounds” was arrested and taken to the Colchester Regional Hospital for treatment under police supervision.

He said a further search of the house revealed the second dead woman.

“These investigations are very tragic,” MacRae said Friday. “Very disturbing scenes for the officers to deal with.”

According to a release, police formally charged Rushton after he was released from the QEII hospital Saturday night. He has been remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside.

Rushton will appear in Truro provincial court on Monday.

RCMP say the autopsies should be completed on Sunday.

MacRae has said police are investigating if the deaths were the result of a double homicide and attempted suicide.

“That’s definitely a possibility,” he said.

MacRae said police are not looking for any other suspects. – with files from The Canadian Press
