Black ribbon ceremony to take place at noon in Sydney

SYDNEY — On the day when eight regional Veterans Affairs offices across Canada are slated to close, plans for protests against the closures at each of the offices are being released.

Veterans are calling on Canadians to wear black ribbons in support of their fight, and have events planned in the affected communities.

In Sydney, veteran Ron Clarke will join veterans and community members at noon today at a black ribbon ceremony at the Veterans Affairs office at 308 George Street in Sydney. They are asking members of the public who support their campaign to show up in support.

In Corner Brook, veteran Paul Davis will join veterans and community members at a wreath laying ceremony at noon at the Veterans Affairs office.

In Charlottetown, veterans will gather at the Charlottetown Veterans Affairs district office at noon.

In Thunder Bay, veterans will be hold a memorial service over the loss of the local Veterans Affairs Canada.

In Windsor, Ont., veterans will hold a memorial service over the loss of the office. Veterans will wear black armbands as they lay a wreath at the doors of the office, and hold a small memorial to signify the loss of services to more than 2,600 veterans.

In Brandon, Man., veterans will gather at 2 p.m. at the Brandon Veterans Affairs district.

In Saskatoon, veterans, and representatives of the Union of Veterans Affairs Employees and the Public Service Alliance of Canada will gather at a news conference at 9 a.m.
