Second thoughts on political body

Talk about evasive action. The senator supposedly representing Prince Edward Island is sure looking like he’s got something to hide about his residential status.

As questions mount about Duffy’s principal home, many were amused by the upper chamber member ducking out after a speaking engagement in Halifax, through a hotel kitchen to avoid meeting the press.

This doesn’t reflect well on this particular senator, but it also speaks volumes about the Senate itself, the entitlements it carries, apparently largely unchecked. Doubtless some will take advantage when left with an open tab at the public trough.

Discrepancies have arisen about where Duffy spends most of the year as the Senate conducts an audit to ensure its members live where they claim. Since senators are supposed to represent the interests of their region, that’s a key requirement.

A recent Postmedia report said he spends most of his year at his Ottawa home – while claiming more than $33,000 in living allowances since 2010.

Media reports have lately said he was refused swift issue of a health card in P.E.I. – ahead of the usual wait period – nor is he often seen by the people he supposedly represents. Property tax rate is also an issue.

Duffy, a former journalist, is among the scads of senators appointed by the Harper government as it sought out Conservative lap dogs to echo its interests in the upper chamber. While we could expect a Conservative prime minister to pick Conservative candidates, that should not come with strings attached.

If the Senate has any value in Canada’s legislative process – and many are rightly skeptical – it can only be if it is truly a political body of sober second thought. Giving friends and allies patronage appointments while demanding something in return simply adds rot to an already suspect system.

Let’s see how much scurrying from the light this audit turns up, and whether it serves to confirm the sentiment most Canadians hold of the Senate.

If we removed the senate and replacing it with tax payers voting annually on all Primary bills being passed, we would finally have a more genuine Democratic governing system instead of bias slants with people who like to play politics or parties who undermine the whole democratic system by wheeling and dealing their votes with other Parties etc.! Maybe Duffy slipped out the back door to find his speech writers and ge advice on what to say is what I am guessing. / David

Problem is Johnny Smoke the system for residency in regards to the NDP and representation of ridings is a mockery as well. Nova Scotia a MLA can live in Caribou while representing Pictou Centre or any riding in the province. The Federal NDP ran anglophone political science grads in the last election for francophone ridings they never visited because in one case she was too busy running a pub in Ottawa. Nothing would surprise me with the hypocritical board game called Canadian Politics. The ndp vowes to rubbish the Senate . Yeah right like Dexter will have a Balanced budget and a 2 percent HST reduction before the next election

Ist mistake is the election of majority governments of any stripe. As we have found out here in Nova Scotia the election of a majority had brought us to the brink of bankruptcy. Not to mention all of the tom foolery with the budget numbers. The election of a majority in Ottawa has brought us with the tom foolery of planes that cannot fulfill their mission, promise of ships that may never be built, and yes the stuffing of the senate with bodies who do not have a clue about anything that does not involve either squandering or pilfering taxpayer money. Remember with the Liberal majority there was Adscam, with the Tory majority was the appointment of mental midgets to the senate. I fear what would happen if the N.D.P. ever formed the government in Ottawa. How about Theresa Spence or Elizabeth May in the senate, don't laugh it could happen. In the mean time just keep sending in your dollars, you can be sure that they will be wasted keeping an archaic institution solvent and laughing all the way to the bank.

I think the problem is not so much with the Senate per se, but rather the way its members are selected and held accountable to the people they are supposed to represent.

The "House of Commons and the Senate" are supposed to be the secondary residence of honourable ladies and gentlemen. Not only that they are supposedly law makers. To me for a large part it is like having the fox in charge of the chicken coop. All those who sit on the side of government are complicit for the fact they do not utter a word of condemnation of people who are both un ethical and unprincipled. due to the fact a large number of government members and some cabinet ministers are lawyers or are soundly knowledegable on the law makes it even worse. Rob ford Mayor of Toronto said he did not read the code of ethics is some what typical of right wing conservative politicians who preach restraint financialy and tough on law but associate themselves with less than desireable characters. If I was on a job and I was taking monies to which I was not entitled I would most likely be fired by my employer and taken to court.
