To the editor,
With tens of millions of dollars slashed from our school boards, it is becoming more difficult for our children to receive the education they deserve. In three years, close to $13 million has been cut from the Chignecto Central Regional School Board budget affecting all school personnel from teachers, librarians and teaching assistants to bus drivers and custodial staff. In June 2013 alone, 31 teaching jobs in the CCRSB were cut and they still faced a $2.5 million budget shortfall.
As if the severe cutbacks weren’t enough, students, parents, and school staff in River John were stressed even further when their school was under review for possible closure. During months of meetings and presentations looking for alternatives to school closure, the position of our government representative was never clear. However, just prior to an election call, that representative announced support for a new school in River John.
A quality education is a priority for the Jamie Baillie Progressive Conservative Party. A PC government will reinvest money back into the classrooms, where it is needed most. They will guarantee lower class sizes by law, and have clearer more consistent report cards. They will give parents the right to choose which school best meets the needs of their family. A PC government will place a moratorium on rural school closures until the Nova Scotia Commission on the New Economy has submitted its final report to the government and further protect rural classrooms by supporting the creation of Community Hub Centres.
Please check out the PC platform at www.pcparty.ns.ca for more information about how a PC government will make education a priority.
