To the editor,
The brutal attack on a gay man in New Glasgow is a horrendous and senseless occurrence. These are not isolated incidents across this country. I am certain the attacker will see true justice, but there is a desperate need push governments, especially departments of education to implement positive educational programs that include sexual orientation.
The family nucleus has changed dramatically over the years to include same-sex families, thus creating a need for a change in curriculum. Our young people are tomorrow’s adults and will work towards a more accepting society. As long as this is but a dream, attacks of this nature will continue.
As an LGBT rights activist I am appalled and saddened by this attack. Attacks of this nature must be dealt with by our courts in a serious manner and deliver punishment to fit the crime. Meanwhile let us join together and work towards a society that realizes everyone to be justified to live in peace, acceptance and pride, regardless of sexual orientation.
My concern at this point is for Scott Jones’s well-being and I wish him a speedy recovery. On behalf of Pictou County’s Rainbow Community and the gay and transgender community in Nova Scotia I wish him well. Let’s work together and contact our MLAs for affirmative action so attacks of this nature will diminish dramatically.
