To the editor,
Recently a letter to the editor appeared in the New Glasgow News concerning our federal Conservative government’s economic and job creation performances. I would like to draw readers’ attention to the facts.
Our government has helped Canada attain the best job creation record in the G7 – because we are focused on what matters to Nova Scotians and Canadians – jobs and economic growth. We also have strong programs like the Canada Job Grant, to help more Canadians get trained and into skilled jobs.
Canada’s financial system has ranked first, for six years, as the safest and soundest in the world, by the World Economic Forum. Canada is the only G7 country to have more than fully recovered business investment lost during the recession. Statistics Canada just announced that our national economy grew in August.
In October, our government reached an historical free trade agreement with the European Union, the largest and most ambitious trade agreement Canada has ever signed. It will boost Canada’s economy $12 billion annually, the equivalent of 80,000 jobs. Canadian businesses will have preferential market access to the EU’s half a billion consumers and $17 trillion economy.
This Conservative government has also cut personal taxes, consumption taxes, business taxes, and excise taxes over 150 times, starting with the GST, and delivering $3,200 in annual tax relief for the average Canadian family of four.
The Conservative government’s $25 billion National Shipbuilding Strategy is bringing unprecedented opportunities for labourers and business across Nova Scotia that will last for decades.
The fact is that only the Conservative government has presented a viable action plan for economic success, as we remain focused on jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians.
Hon. Peter MacKay
