Canada Post rate hikes and service cuts a bad move

To the editor,

The recent announcement by Canada Post’s president Deepak Chopra to raise postage rates while slashing services is a direct slap in the face to me and my family. I am a letter carrier in New Glasgow, I deliver mail to the north end of town on a daily basis, walking about 15 to 20 kilometres per day depending on the mail volumes.

I enjoy my job, I love meeting and talking to my customers and I feel a responsibility to look out for my customers as well. There are numerous stories told by carriers of coming to the aid of a customer. I myself, while delivering my morning mail in early fall, came across a small four-year-old girl crying on her back deck. Her school had closed for some reason and she had been bused home. However the parents had not been notified and as a result she was alone outside her locked home. I took her to a neighbour who I knew would care for her and we managed to get in touch with her parents.

Other carriers have helped seniors who have fallen, or were in need of assistance, we have detected fires before they got out of control, caught loose dogs, you name it we do it. For Canada Post to state that door-to-door delivery is no more means not only a loss of service but a loss of a way of life! Please stop this loss, call Peter MacKay, MP, lobby your government and call Canada Post. Thank you!
