To the editor,
News from Premier Stephen McNeil should give some degree of optimism and satisfaction to the local group lobbying for a cleanup at Northern Pulp.
At a meeting on Thursday, McNeil stated that if Northern Pulp is to remain in Nova Scotia “…it will come with the responsibility of helping to clean up the Boat Harbour treatment ponds and dealing with emissions coming from the company’s stacks.”
McNeil further stated: “We made it very clear (to Northern Pulp) there would be no forgivable loans under our administration.”
I can’t recall a new government ever making such bold, unambiguous policy statements on the public record. This is the first time I recall a government has put the environment and the health and wellbeing of citizens ahead of corporate interests.
Good for you, Premier McNeil, and congratulations to the local community group that has worked so hard to protect their families.
Now, let’s hold McNeil’s feet to the fire.
