‘Fair’ Elections Act undermines our democracy

To the editor,
I sent the following to our MP, Peter MacKay, concerning The “Fair” Election Act, Bill C-23. I encourage anyone in Central Nova concerned for our democracy to let him know this bill is unacceptable.

Of the many experts who raised alarm, I quote Sheila Fraser, the former auditor general, who exposed the sponsorship scandal.

"Elections are the base of our democracy and if we do not have truly a fair electoral process and one that can be managed well by a truly independent body, it really is an attack on our democracy and we should all be concerned about that. Among other things, the proposed legislation would disenfranchise thousands of voters, undercut the independence of the chief electoral watchdog, impede investigations into wrongdoing, give a financial advantage to rich, established parties and undermine Canadians' faith in the electoral system.”

She urged Canadians to speak up.

Dear Mr. MacKay, do not take this letter as a personal attack, it is meant to speak to your conscience. Think of it as a life-ring tossed to you in a sea of corruption.

Could you please put your country before your party and work within your party to abolish Bill C-23 The “Fair” Election Act. This is not a policy which we may disagree on, this bill undermines our nation's democracy. The manner in which this bill is being rammed through the parliamentary process is an abuse of power. The bill must be abolished because of the manner in which it was drafted; amendments are not acceptable.

You are aware of the concerns and the outcry from both Canadian and international experts. Think of your early days in opposition, surely you would have been rightly horrified if any other party tried to pass such laws. If you stand by and let this happen to Canada the use of the words “honourable” and “justice” in your title become as Orwellian as the word “fair” in the election act. If your party won’t listen to reason then leave them, and stand up for the citizens of Canada.

Find your integrity.

Very nice letter Maryanne. Minister MacKay might be gearing up for a leadership run of the Con. Party of Canada...last night(April 11/14) might have been the start of a fund-raising cycle in which Min.MacKay will need all the funds he can gather to run for the leadership against a few more contenders. This is where politicians will need "you". Remember, "you" and "I'" are here to serve their aspirations in Ottawa not the other way around....a bad,bad Bill from Min.MacKay's Con.Party will help no one in Canada except those who want to suppress votes....the incumbent Party in "power". Remember the fiascos at Foreign Affairs,Defence and now Justice....Min.MacKay's handling of each of these portfolio's has been less than stellar....the records and actions speaks for itself. Asking Min.MacKay to do something that will go against his political master probably will not work(why would it really?....Their is no political gain for such actions in his Party)....a suggestion is a public gathering ,nothing large just a few supporters for a Just and Democratic society that Canada was and can become again. Bill C-23 might not be Min.MacKay's bill in the HOC but a few of us who do not support voter suppression can take a stand so that all Canadians, from sea to sea to sea, can and will be treated equally and just. Equality For All. Thank you.

Mr. Mackay, Years from now a moment in time will come where what you do now will have a lasting effect on how you are viewed by the most important person to evaluate you, your son Kian. How he phrases that question will depend on how you act now in relation to the biggest attack on our country since you sold your soul and lied to david Orcard, the "Fair Election" Act. That question will be based on your integrity, and at this moment in time you are the only one that has the ability to make that question a positive or negative one. Being a hero now for the people that elected you, will easily make you a hero to him in the future....going the negative way now and not standing up for what is right is going to be difficult to explain away. I hope you choose correctly.

I sent him this one....but I don't think he's listening or willing to stand up to our "dear leader" on this one..... Honourable Peter Mackay, It is with great disappointment that I learn of Bill C-23 and the dangerous changes it poses to the Elections Act. As a voting member of your Pictou County riding; I respectfully request that you: 1) Withdraw your support for Bill C-23 2) Respect the Elections Act, as it currently stands. 3) Work for increased transparency and accountability in our Electoral system. When government quickly moves to make such changes to important legislation, without consulting the public or federal and provincial elections officials, academics and respected electoral experts, it begs questions of what is happening behind the scenes of our government. It is in fact, true, that the proposed legislation would disenfranchise thousands of voters, undercut the independence of the chief electoral watchdog, impede investigations into wrongdoing, give a financial advantage to rich, established parties and undermine Canadians' faith in the electoral system, these are not a sacrifices, I am willing to make. There does not seem to be any factual indications that changes to the Elections Act were necessary other than to cater to special interests. It seems unlikely that you have independently come to the conclusion the Elections Act needed these amendments. It would seem more likely that changes were lobbied for by parties who stand to gain from these changes, specifically the Harper government. Please, as a steward of our democracy, with the obligation to protect this fair land and to provide service in the best interests of the people, I urge you to act accordingly and do the right thing. We need leaders of strength, courage and integrity. We do not need weak-willed lackeys who act as proxies in the democratic system who do the bidding of corporations. Here is your opportunity to show the Canadian Public who you are and the values you represent. A leader who stands strong. Or a shill who lays down for the right price. I am curious which role you will choose. Kind regards,

Great letter! Everyone should copy and paste this letter (with your permission), add their own thoughts, and send it to him as soon as possible! Let's stand up to this attack on our democracy, before it's too late.
