To the editor,
Last weekend, I joined a room full of my colleagues and their friends and families for Doctors Nova Scotia’s annual achievement awards ceremony to celebrate the extraordinary work of six exemplary physicians.
Dr. John Chiasson, a family physician from Antigonish, received the Physician Health Promotion Award for his healthy living advocacy and community involvement. He has led the repurposing of the Keppoch ski hill into an all-season outdoor adventure park for his local community.
Dr. Kenneth Wilson, a plastic surgeon at the IWK Health Centre, received the Distinguished Service Award for his long-term volunteer work with Operation Smile and a travelling clinic in Sydney, where he provides care to children in need of cleft lip and palate repair.
Dr. Brian Ferguson, a family physician in Amherst, received the Rural Physician of the Year Award. It was in recognition of his commitment to the patients of Cumberland County and his work establishing a level II emergency department at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, securing its regional status, and obtaining much-needed government financial support.
Dr. Camille Hancock Friesen of Halifax was honoured with the Dr. William Grigor Award for her work as a paediatric cardiac surgeon and her commitment to quality of care. She has ensured the measurement of outcomes in cardiac surgeries at the IWK Health Care Centre through a rigorous quality improvement and monitoring program.
The Senior Membership Award was given to Dr. Wayne Brown of Musquodoboit Harbour for the exemplary service and care his comprehensive general practice has provided to the residents of the Eastern Shore.
I’m proud to be able to celebrate the outstanding work of my colleagues and share their accomplishments with the rest of the province.
