Re: "Time to tackle taxes" – The News, June 19
One aspect of the tax debate that is rarely mentioned is the transition from a somewhat progressive tax regime to a regressive one.
In particular, consumption taxes like the GST, PST and HST are highly regressive. Taxpayers are correctly upset when the more wealthy are paying the same rate as the less wealthy.
Taxes are the price we pay for a society and the services that we want, need and use.
When the tax burden is paid more and more by those least able to afford it then "taxes" becomes a "bad word."
