To the editor,

While visiting my family in Pictou County over the holidays, I made one last sentimental visit to the Zellers store in New Glasgow. It was nostalgic because Zellers has been a part of our Canadian identity for many years and it will soon be gone forever. Everyone who grew up in Pictou County has at least one memory of shopping at Zellers. I can even recall going downstairs in the "old" Zellers store downtown to look at the toys at Christmas time. Every September it was Zellers for school supplies. One happy spring it was a brand new 10-speed bike from Zellers. I even worked at Zellers one summer when I was in university.

There was a time, before giant American box stores oozed greedily

across our borders, that we were all satisfied purchasing from stores like Zellers, Goodman's, and Eaton's. What's next? Our beloved Canadian Tire? We inch closer and closer to seeing every last Canadian company go out of business because Canadians have an insatiable need to buy more and more cheap, American brand name goods – made by children in third-world countries – that they do not need!

I can see the faces of so many of the hardworking men and women who were a part of the Zellers store in New Glasgow for so many years. Thank you very much for your years of service to the shoppers of Zellers in Pictou County.

Support our own country. Buy Canadian products. Shop local stores.
