Dexter stealing from our newspaper carriers

To the editor,

First off I would like to say that I have never been an NDP supporter and as things are going now I never will be. The 2 per cent increase in HST took effect on July 1, which will make us the highest taxed province in Canada. Thanks Mr. Dexter! You must have very intelligent people behind the scenes working for you to come up with this original idea. I wonder how much they were paid and how much time they wasted coming up with this (wrong) easy solution. All you have essentially done is forced people and businesses from moving to this province and sent some people packing as well. Is this an intelligent way to increase revenue for the province? I think not. You and your advisers should have looked at ways to attract people and business to the province to increase revenue. Wait a minute you did do that by bringing Daewoo here. But with all the taxpayers money that you are giving them, I could have taken over the Trenton plant. Not that I am not happy the plant will be opening again, but I think you could have negotiated better.

So with this shortfall of money, the Dexter government is unknowingly (they are not smart enough to realize) going after our newspaper carriers. Let me explain. With the 2 per cent increase in HST on July 1, the newspaper rate will be going from $6.47 to $6.60 for a two-week period. An increase of 13 cents. My son, who is a carrier, will collect money from the subscribers every two weeks and in a lot of cases he will receive $10 to cover the amount owed and the rest will be a well deserved tip for him. With the increase in HST, the subscriber will still give him $10 (which he appreciates), so the 13 cents will come out of his tips. That might not sound like much, but when you multiply it by 25 people it could mean the carrier losing around $3 in tips. Once again thanks Mr. Dexter! I would say this is like “stealing candy from a baby.”

Our carriers work hard for the money they get, they don’t deserve a decrease in pay. Do you know what is really a shame? Not only do they lose the 2 per cent from their pay, but when they buy something with their money they also have to pay 2 per cent more for it.

All I see from this government so far is broken promises, increase in taxes, and cuts in services. This is in a one-year period. What further damage can they do in the next three years? I’m sure that as we get closer to another election they will start making more promises they are sure not to keep. I just hope people will not fall for it again.

Not an NDP supporter,

Doug Linehan

Doug, As someone who had worked in tip related industries for years, I would have to say at 34% tip average, your son is doing better then 99.9% of other tip dependent workers. Why not petition his employer to pay him more if tips if losing $3.00/bi-week is that devastating. I certainly don't aim to take away from your son here, or slight his right to tips. Lets put this in perspective. I didn't hear anyone (other then the odd business owner who only pays their staff minimum to begin with) cry when they put up minimum wage (which also as it turned out, led to price increases in a lot of food/beverage establishments, which lead to a drop in tips by disgruntled customers). It's right to make sure people get paid more, but we cry when we need to pay more tax to cover the luxuries we all love? How about we close the Aberdeen hospital two days a week and drop the tax back to 13%? Sound reasonable? While I didn't vote NDP last time, I am certainly considering voting for them this time. I commend the NDP for having the guts to make an unpopular (but necessary) choice in raising our taxes. We want good roads, prompt service in hospitals, and all the other luxuries we enjoy and demand in the Western World. We have the largest (2nd) country in the world and the smallest population density of any western nation, how do you think we are going to maintain this place? Why do you think we are the best off western nation after the recession? Thats right, high taxes (maybe the highest in the world). And lets not even discuss grants/loans/etc to get business to come here (Neenah, Kimberly Clark, Scott Paper, Michelin, etc, etc, etc). We have a horrible (in my opinion) record of hand outs to wealthy corporations in order to get them to do business here. It's the price of Globalization and all parties are guilty. We all want cheap crap to fill our homes, and Wal Mart will get it for us. But then we cry when our factories close/outsource, we lose our jobs, and our government has to subsidize companies to bring them in to make work (at an ever lower wage) for its citizens. We cannot have our cake and eat it too. Do you think Doctors work for free? or Roads pave themselves? Give your head a shake, if you don't want to pay the tax, move to the US and pay it privately. As a business owner I can assure you a 2% tax increase won't kill us (the business community), if it will, the business probably wasn't long for this world anyways. We're the highest taxed province because we have more retirees then any other province in Canada (not offense intended to retirees). If more people were working, vs drawing pension (again no offense intended) then we would have more income tax to work with. We have to get that tax revenue in somehow. To boil this all down, we survived it once, we will survive it again. If you want to enjoy the quality of life we have, pay your taxes. If your so aghast by the increase, then spend less money and stick it to them that way. But don't cry that the NDP is taking money from your son and driving people, business, and prosperity away and imply it t is through incompetence or ill-will. They, as I am sure all governments do, have the interest of the people only slightly behind the interests of themselves and are doing the best they can.

Never thought I'd hear someone complain about a 34% tip.
