Another NDP faux pas or indifference?

To the editor,

I was in Antigonish recently and came across what seemed to be a picket line. This event was taking place near the bridge repair construction site. I soon found out that it was not a picket line.  It was a protest from unemployed Nova Scotians, exercising their right to voice their discontent.

I found out that they were rightfully upset about local jobs going to out-of-province workers. Those out-of-province workers will take Nova Scotia taxpayers dollars away from Nova Scotia. They will not be buying cars, appliances, paying for home repairs, or renovations and they are not going to pay any income taxes in this province.

I agree with the government that contracts should go to the lowest bidder. What I do not agree with is the way this deal was made. The NDP government should have put a requirement for this company to hire local qualified workers. This shows a lack of know-how and care from the NDP.  Such a requirement was included in contracts before while the NDP was in opposition.  They obviously were not paying attention.

And now here we are with NDP MLA Maurice Smith who says “there is nothing I can do.”  Nobody listens to him in Halifax. Our Premier Darrell Dexter is a lawyer who could not think about Nova Scotians first, and Deputy Leader Frank Corbett seems to have chosen to forget everything he knew about labour fairness.

Thanks to the NDP, gone are our tax dollars and jobs that should have been filled by Nova Scotians.

Maurice Smith, NDP MLA says no one in Halifax will listen to him. Welcome to the club Moe. The Halifax inner circle are concerned about the 1/3 of the population who live in Metro. We gi;ll get a crumb or two but Metro is King.

Mr Breen ,If there was not a need for Nova Scotia workers in Alberta do you think the Government of that province would allow you to diplace one of their workers.Think about it,they could not get the job done if were not for you and many more form Atlantic Canada. We are doing their much needed work. When the work dries up lets see how long they keep you.In their eyes you are a needed evil.

As someone who left NS 3 yrs ago to come to Alberta, I find it annoying that people would protest about non-local workers going there to work. Considering in the boom, how many people migrated here to work in the oil patch or elsewhere in the province but left their families behind in NS, with the excuse AB was not fit to raise a family. This is a ridiculous assertion as there are many wonderful places to raise a family outside the confines of Fort McMurray. Therefore, most of the money earned in AB (easily triple what they would earn in NS) went back east and not into our local economy. These people felt it was good enough to go and work but not live, but yet are the first to complain if someone else goes where the work is as they once did. I moved here to work and live, and my money stays where I earn it, as I, personally, think that is only right, however don't judge others for what thousands of maritimers did themselves very recently, and I see them starting to return as the economy improves. Furthermore, your comment that these people don't pay tax dollars there is false. You pay provincial taxes in the province in which you work not where you reside. As to stating tax dollars and jobs should have gone to Nova Scotians, that would be completely dependent on whether they could do the job, do it on budget and not price themselves out of the market not simply because they live there. That is old time politics at its best.
