To the editor,
Several months ago, Mrs. Shirley MacPherson decided, in her wisdom, to attack the mayor and councillors of Pictou with the first of a number of letters to the editor. At the time I composed a letter to respond to her inaccuracies, but it was suggested that it would be futile and of no benefit to debate with someone who was unwilling to listen.
In retrospect, although sage advice, I may have been too kind since she continues to berate us with inane remarks, and with absolutely no knowledge of how the political system truly operates.
I actually jest when suggesting Mrs. MacPherson be appointed to council since she criticizes and rants with no proof or substance. I would not entertain stepping aside for fear that someone like this might indeed offer and attempt to lead our town with no foresight and therefore no solution(s). Furthermore, I would never subject my colleagues to an individual who makes outlandish statements and provides no direction whatsoever.
Since this council (Mr. Naylor joining in 2008) has been in charge of the town’s affairs, we have met numerous challenges and made some tough decisions with a clear vision in mind. That’s right, making progress so our town flourishes.
To name a few, we introduced a Functional Use Study for the deCoste Entertainment Centre hoping to bring Pictou County on board with an infusion of cash; removing the operational costs of the Fisheries Training Pool from our books by negotiating an agreement with the Shared Services Authority; taking our town into the 21st century with a sewage treatment plant; encouraging new development(s) with enhanced bylaws and allowing the Ship Hector and Quay the opportunity to be an independent entity, thus mitigating future costs for our residents.
So, Mrs. MacPherson, these small-minded people, as you prefer to call us, have actually concocted some “big-minded ideas” because we, in fact, are willing to place our necks in the guillotine to make a difference.
I challenge you ma’am, to move into town, run for political office and then, let’s determine who is incompetent.
Ken Johnston
Proud Pictou Town Councillor
