To the editor,
It is reassuring to know my articles are being followed so closely. Welcome to the table Mr. Christie. I believe in democracy where everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter what their political affiliation. The answer is simple to why I have attacked the Darrell Dexter socialist government.
First I would like to enlighten you on the process of constructive criticism that is an inherent part of our political system. Our system is made up of Her Majesty’s loyal government, charged by the voters of this province to administer our governmental affairs. This system was so wisely designed with a built in safety net, called Her Majesty’s loyal opposition, and their job is to ensure that government fulfils the mandate given to them by the voters.
Therefore it is perplexing to say the least when a taxpayer of this province does not welcome remarks intended to safeguard the interests of this province. But of course there could be other underlying self-serving interests.
If throughout history we did not question our governments, how would we keep them honest? Through history as you said, our brave men and women have fought and died, and are still fighting and dying for this privilege. I know the cost. We lost an uncle in Italy and his four brothers gave up their youth and innocence for the freedom we should all cherish. One of those men was my father.
An autocracy is the opposite of democracy where there is no loyal opposition. There is no ability to write letters to the editor. Constructive criticism is a means to jail, or in some cases a way to the guillotine. In this culture we find only positive commentary where people are instructed to speak highly of their leaders.
In reference to the success of NDP governments, and their pure virtues, I suggest you look further in history and look to Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia CCF, NDP waffle Party (all NDP parties). In those provinces their success rate was not so glowing.
When you talk about negativity I am amused: the NDP/CCF spent the last 60 years running down successive governments while their biggest contribution was to tie the hands of governments behind their backs preventing good legislation from passing. Then when they finally win an election those same laws, budgets and bills they campaigned against are put into action, by the NDP Premier Darrell Dexter.
In the present global financial crises, some of our global friends are experiencing financial disaster while here in Canada we are enjoying a more stable economy. They are looking at our banking institutions, and holding them up as an example for when they restructure.
Following your rule of positivity would you not agree that someone in the past governments set a good example? The Scotia and the Royal Banks were founded in Nova Scotia.
