Truck route needed going around Stellarton core

To the editor,

So Stellarton? Potholes? Man we have them. They are a huge issue. And I do mean HUGE. What to do? Well, immediately everyone says "REPAVE" but is that the best answer? Our main street is a throughway for trucks heading to Sheet Harbour as well as logging trucks heading to Trafalgar. These large trucks exact a horrible toll on roads that were not designed for them. Is there a solution? I believe there is.

In my opinion, the best solution is to give the trucks a clear path to the highway. Imagine if we pushed a road from Beaufort Street in the Industrial Park, clear through past the town limits. It would have to be a joint effort between the county the town, the province and the federal government, but this is the kind of project they get behind as it's a highly visible project. It would save our roads, reduce traffic and make it safer and easier for the truckers as well. Of course we still need to repave sections, but the potholes would be a lot less under my plan.

This would be a tremendous project for all involved…. So good in fact, it will probably never be done.

Why not just build a road around the whole town, or better still change the name from Stellarton to Potholeton. For the life of me I never saw an municipality with it's streets in such bad shape, makes me wonder what the thinking is to let your main infrastructure deteriorate to such an extent. Two thoughts come to mind, firstly you lost your shirt on the Lawrence Ave venture, or secondly ex chief Heighton will be the next owner of the town assets, if and when the law suit for back pay is finally settled. Maybe Amby will step up to the plate and correct this horrendous situation.

Excellent idea before a serious accident happens. Those trucks are dangereous with unstable loads.

"These large trucks exact a horrible toll on roads that were not designed for them. Is there a solution?"......Perhaps the street can be built to accomodate large trucks. The same way Halifax does, the same way Montreal does, the same way Toronto does.
