STELLARTON - An early morning fire has destroyed the Scotia Recycling Depot.
Firefighters got the call that they would be heading to a fully-involved structure fire, which they say started shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday night.
Deputy Chief Mike O'Sullivan, said when his department got there, "flames were probably 30 feet in the air. We had some explosions too, on arrival, because there were propane tanks and acetylene equipment that exploded."
Given the location of the fire and the nature of the materials firefighters were dealing with, O'Sullivan said their primary concern was keeping watch on the surrounding areas.
"The lumber yard was our main concern," he said, referring to Proudfoot's, which is adjacent to the recycling depot.
"But fortunately the wind was blowing away from that location - it was blowing from the south to the north."
The fire kept Stellarton's firefighters, as well as those in surrounding districts, busy until mid-day Sunday. O'Sullivan said they'll continue monitor hotspots.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. An investigation by the fire marshall's office is pending.
A fire destroyed Scotia Recycling's previous location, in the town's industrial park in October 2007.

It may have been an eye sore but think of all the people that were working and making a living there even if it was minimum wages. Remember, on place down leaves people on the unemployment list or the welfare system. Alot of you out there have jobs that aren't like what goes on in the recycling line and probably wouldn't put your foot forward to work in a place like that but some people have to work wherever they can get a job.

I feel very bad for the people living close to the fire and the firemen. The smoke was sickening this morning, I was in Stellarton about 6:45am and the smoke went from the fire scene to the co-op in New Glasgow. I could barely stand driving through it let alone live near that. Good thing the wind was blowing that way or it could of been a lot worse.

Yes the smoke is still sickning and did any realize the smoke when the fire started was blowing right to our water supply can you say yummy. I never want to see that god forsake place anywhere in the county again our repersentives should step up and get them out!

This place was a death trap. Piles of card board , paper and plastic from wall to wall, stacked 3 to 5 bales high around the entire place. The air was extreamly dry and dusty. Not to mention i know of workers getting stuck with dirty needles that come down the line and company could care less that those incidents happened as they would send the unsorted stuff with the needles in it back up the line.
We would compare the place to those firelogs you can buy at walmart and so forth. It was nothing more then a gaint tinder box with forklifts with hot exhuasts driving around all day long.
As with any company it was about making money not about saftey.
All one has to know to realize this was that the stellarton location was supose to be just a temp spot due to the last fire, but it was cheap considering there was not even any heat in the buliding so the company kept using it .
I feel for the workers that have been put out and thank god that this fire happened when the building was empty and not during full production.
Maybe now Scotia Recycling will do things the right way instead of just cutting corners.
I too however am curious as to the cause of the fire.

It is very suspicous that the place lit as fast as it did. From what I hear the people who worked at Scotia Recycling were treated more like the garbage they sifted through and not like working folks trying to make a living. Maybe if Scotia Recycling treated it's employees better they might have better luck. I agree with Bill, why would they have a recycling depot just feet from peoples homes? From what I hear, this is not their second fire but their fourth( two fires before they moved to our county). I wonder where they will pop up next.
