FREDERICTON - The New Brunswick government is introducing legislation to ensure same-sex common-law partners in the province are entitled to the same benefits as opposite-sex common-law partners.
The bill would amend more than 30 acts and regulations.
Attorney General T.J. Burke said Wednesday the changes would bring New Brunswick in line with other Canadian jurisdictions by respecting a 1999 Supreme Court of Canada decision.
He said the benefits and obligations are being met, but were not reflected in legislation.
"It's a very important bill, because we are moving forward as a province in treating people in same-sex relationships equally," said Burke.
Among the benefits, same-sex partners can seek property rights and support through the courts when a relationship breaks down.
As well, all six public pension acts will extend pension benefits - including survivor benefits - to all common-law partners.
Eldon Hay, past president of the national Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays organization, said Burke was to be commended for a "fine piece of legislation."
"I think it's fantastic. It should have and could have been done years ago, but the previous government wouldn't do it," said Hay, a retired United Church minister and the father of a gay son and a lesbian daughter.
"It means that gays and lesbians are equal with others. It moves our culture and country along in a socially progressive way. It's better for all of us."
