NEW GLASGOW - Meredith Dickie isn't your typical bride.
While most brides focus on taking their wedding pictures at the beach or a park, she headed out on the East River for a ride aboard a dragon boat.
Dickie, 25, is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed in July 2006 at the age of 22 when her doctor did a breast exam and discovered a lump.
She began paddling with the Abreast Ariver dragon boat team in May 2007, and this year, became the team captain.
Dickie, along with her new husband, Bryan Roossinck, decided to take a spin on the dragon boat as a way to include her beloved teammates in their special day. This was Roossinick's first time on a dragon boat.
"These women became a very big part of my life," said Dickie. "Because there's so many on the team, we couldn't invite them all to the wedding, but we wanted them to be involved in our day."
Cancer has played a major role in her life over the past few years. She lost both her parents to cancer - her mother died of breast cancer when Dickie was only 15, and at 21, her father died of brain cancer - as well as fighting her own battle three years ago.
But riding on a dragon boat on her wedding day is her way of putting a happy face on cancer, she said.
"There's life after cancer," Dickie said. "Good things can happen after cancer, this is proof of that."
