NEW GLASGOW - Two residents of Green's Trailer Court were taken to hospital by EHS for observation after their trailer caught fire on Thursday afternoon.
Members of the New Glasgow Fire Department responded to the call around 3 p.m. and quickly had the smoky blaze subdued.
Fire chief Russell Mosher said the fire was electrical in nature.
"It was an appliance (small TV) in the bedroom, an electrical malfunction of the power supply. It overheated…The appliance was completely melted."
Mosher described the damage to the older-model trailer as extensive.
"It's an older model trailer and with the amount of damage that was done it's probably irreparable."
He did say that the homeowners had insurance.
Mosher said one of the homeowners was outside when firefighters arrived and he told them that he was okay, his wife was next door at a neighbour's trailer by them. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and took both to hospital.
"It was a precautionary measure. They are older people. They were taken for observation and to be checked out."
The chief said they did have a working smoke detector in the home and he took this time to issue a message of fire safety.
"Try to be fire-safe in every way. Be careful with grease, we have a lot of greasfires. Make sure your smoke detector is working."
