Atlantic Canadian grocery giant Sobeys launched a Green Bag For Life program last fall to divert plastic bags from the waste stream.

Jill Thomas-Myrick, a spokeswoman for Sobeys Atlantic , said the reusable, environmentally friendly shopping bags are available at Sobeys, Foodland and Price Chopper stores in Atlantic Canada.

Wed like to see more of our customers choose to use Green Bag For Life. This is all about choice and offering options and we will continue to offer these to customers, said Thomas -Myrick.

The bags cost $1.99 each and have a maximum weight capacity of 20 kilograms.

This month, Presidents Choice launched its reusable, green grocery bags which it promotes as being made of 85 per cent of recycled plastic.
