NEW GLASGOW– The North Nova Girls hockey team travelled to Cole Harbour on Wednesday to take part in the NSSAF High School Female Provincial Championships.

NNEC won the regional banner in Tatamagouche last week by defeating CEC in two straight games.  In their first game the Gryphons defeated the host Cole Harbour Cavaliers 4-2 coming from behind to score three straight goals in the third period.  Hayley Foote, Emily Dicks, Robyn Doyle and Lyndsay Oakes scored for the Gryphons.  Assists went to Meghan Watters with 2, Brandi McCuish, Laura Jenkins and Oakes.  In Game 2 on Wednesday, NNEC were matched up with Dalbrae Academy from Mabou.  Dalbrae opened the scoring but North Nova quickly got on the board and never looked back in a 5-2 victory.   McCuish and Oakes each had two goals with Jenkins scoring one.  Meryl MacDougall and Oakes had two assists each with Doyle and Oakes each adding one assist.

On Thursday, the girls defeated the Kings Edgehill team from Windsor 3-1 to advance to crossover play. It was the Gryphon’s first win over KES whom they had met on five pervious occasions.  McCuish, Kelsey Boudreau and Jenkins in the open net scored for NNEC.  Assists went to Oakes, Julia Henderson and Jenkins.  This win gave NNEC a perfect three-win record and advanced them to the semi-final crossover game later that day against the Millwood Knights of Sackville.

NNEC had many great scoring chances, especially in the second period, but were unable to solve the Millwood netminder.  Millwood scored three minutes into the third period in what proved to be the game-winning goal.
