Luke Demetre lifts weights while home on a break last year. Next week he’ll be competing in Winterberg, Germany as part of the World Cup bobsledding circuit.
Pictou County native Luke Demetre is climbing in the ranks of the world’s bobsledding teams.
After competing last year on the Europa circuit, Demetre is now racing on the World Cup Circuit as the brakeman for the Canada 3 team, who are now among the top 20 four-man teams in the world.
Demetre most recently competed at Whistler, B.C. last Saturday, where his team finished 13th.
“The competition is a lot better in the World Cup,” he said while home this week for a brief visit. “This is the top level in bobsledding.”
The races are televised and the atmosphere is different, although people are still friendly, he said.
Demetre got his start in bobsledding when he was picked out while training as a member of the Dalhousie track team. Because bobsledders need to be both fast and strong, his abilities as a sprinter were considered an asset. He moved out to Calgary and has been training there ever since.
He said it’s nice to have made it on to the World Cup circuit and he hopes to continue to see the team increase their speed and get better results.
“We’re doing pretty well right now and doing better each week,” he said.
Between now and Christmas he will be in Europe competing in Winterberg, Germany and La Plagne, France.
“Hopefully in the next few years we’ll be able to get to an Olympic competition,” he said. “That’s the goal right now.”
