After going down early to the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks the Weeks Crushers inched their way back into the game, eventually winning their first game of 2013 4-3.

The Lumberjacks scored just three minutes into the game on a shot from the slot. Garrett Holmes would answer back for the Crushers 12 minutes into the frame, but the Lumberjacks strong offensive pressure would pay off just over two minutes later as Jacob Conrad beat Brandon Thibeau to take a 2-1 lead through one period.

In the second both teams had their fair share of chances, but the Crushers would still trail by one heading into the final period as both teams traded power play goals. Jordan Moore scored late in the period for Pictou County, while Crawley scored in the first half of the second for the Lumberjacks.

Midway through the third period the Weeks Crushers hit their stride as Cody Squires scored nine minutes into the period, followed by Tyler Doyle’s eventual game-winning goal with 13 minutes remaining in the period.

Jordan Moore had one goal and two assists in the Crushers win and said after the game that the first two periods were a little struggle for the team trying to get their legs back under them after the break.

“I was just trying to get my legs back and the puck was bouncing so we were just trying to get pucks on net and in the third I think we kept the game simple and that’s when we took over play of the game,” he said.

Being down early in their first game he said the team was just trying to stay positive on the bench, hoping things would start to click.

“We were trying to stay positive because we knew our legs wouldn’t be there the first couple of periods, but we just kept with it and Jason kept things positive for us,” he said.

He continued, saying he didn’t believe the team wouldn’t have been as mentally tough at the beginning of the season to push through the first two periods like they did on Thursday.

“At the start of the year I don’t think we would’ve come back like that,” said Moore. “I think the teams starting to show a lot of character and a desire to win.”

The Crushers won’t skate Friday, but will have a light practice Saturday prior to their 1 p.m. game on Sunday on the road against Metro.
