WESTVILLE - The Highland Nissan Habs started the New Year off with a decisive win over the Bestway Panthers with a score of 11-5. Hat tricks came from the sticks of Cory MacKinnon, Blaine Murray and Jason Sample. Joe Reim and Brian Gratto scored a goal apiece.

Replying for the Panthers were Ricky Wright (2), Dave Sinnis, Kevin MacKenzie and Jerry Austin.

Murray said the Habs spent some time in an undisclosed cabin over the holidays to try to "gel" and work on their defence on the pond outside the cabin.

"I think it worked by the way we played our game tonight,” said Murray. "We had too much hot chocolate and egg nog, but I think everyone is on the same page now."

The second game of the night was a close scoring affair as Docs Demons nipped the Acropole Blues 5-4. Scoring for Docs were Clarence Elms, Jason O'Donnell, Mike Rankin, and Dave and Scott MacKinnon. Acropole scorers were John Behie (2), Phillip Bell and Colin MacKenzie.

“Both goalies, Gordon Morris and Robbie Campbell stood on their heads tonight,” said Rankin. “Any team can win in this league and it all starts with the net minders and of course, reminding our forwards to skate back to help out in our end."
