HALIFAX - The president of Dalhousie University is “considering” the suspension of the women’s hockey team over a so-called hazing incident after meeting with the players.
Members of the women’s team met with Dr. Tom Traves on Monday morning, but a university spokesperson said they didn’t offer any new information.
“The students read a statement and asked a few questions of the president, and he asked a few questions of the students,” said Charles Crosby. “But there was nothing new presented…the situation really doesn’t appear to be any different from it was a week and a half ago when this first came to light.”
The university suspended senior players on Jan. 3 after an internal investigation into the alleged hazing last September.
The players, who didn’t speak to media after Monday’s meeting, had previously released a statement saying the punishment didn’t fit the crime.
They said no one was forced to do anything during the night in question, when rookies were sent on a scavenger hunt, dressed up in “odd clothing” and joined in drinking games.
Dalhousie has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing, and Crosby has said the players’ version of events is “highly selective.”
He said Traves will respond to the players later this week.
“As a courtesy, when someone brings thoughts to you and asks for response, you do that, you consider what they had to say and you reply, and he’ll do that,” said Crosby.
