PICTOU COUNTY – Craig Aucoin will reach Sault Ste, Marie on his virtual cross-Canada tour this Sunday morning at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Aucoin, who is legally completely blind, is currently in training with his friend and personal trainer Lloyd McLean for their trip across Canada beginning on Aug. 4, 2013. The trip, coined the “Craig gives Back-to-Back Cross-Canada Bicycle Tour” is meant to raise awareness for the three Canadian charities (CNIB, YMCA and Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind) that have played a significant role in Aucoin’s life and personal development.
“It’s kind of a big event for people to come out to see us reach that mark with 20 to 30 cyclists and we’ll have coffee and Timbits there for people.”
Beginning their public training on Aug. 5 at the Wellness Centre, every Sunday since the duo have spun for 140 to 150 km. Aucoin is excited to finally reach the halfway point of their trip. To mark the milestone the local triathlete club and road racing cyclists will join them in the gym at the YMCA.
“My goal has always been to be strong, healthy, positive and to motivate other people,” he said. “After stories on people with disabilities doing this and that and telling their stories and being an inspiration I decided, ‘why not share my story.’”
He has done several running events, swim meets and has completed eight sprint triathlons, but this will be the first event of this magnitude for him.
They will be spinning from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. The general public is welcome to stop in to visit during the training and to see them reach their halfway point in the virtual trip.
