NEW GLASGOW – Friday night the North Nova Gryphons jv basketball team opened their invitational tournament with a 75-63 victory over Amherst Regional High School.
With a significant lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Gryphons allowed Amherst to inch their way back into the game. Peter MacIntosh, a Grade 12 player, said after the game that the team wasn’t concerned about losing the game, even when the Vikings closed the gap.
“We were confident that we would close the game well,” he said. “When we got our lead we were playing with younger players. They all played well and are just as important as the seniors on the team. We put a few more seniors in late, but the time on the court is important to the younger guys.”
MacIntosh said heading into the tournament the focus has been on their offense after working on defensive play for the early portion of the season. He said shooting needs to improve more for the team to finish the season strong. He also said that even with the focus being on improving for the end of the season that the team wants to win their home tournament.
“It’s important for us to win this because it’s at home, but we have good competition,” he said. “We want to be in every game and hope to be on the winning end of them as well.”
In their second game the Gryphons dropped Pictou Academy 63-27. The win sends North Nova to the championship game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
