PORT HAWKESBURY – Friday night, in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, the Pictou County slipped past the Strait Pirates and into second place in the Sid Rowe Division with a 4-3 win in Port Hawkesbury.

At the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre league-leading scorer Brandon Verge led the Scotians with a hat-trick to increase his lead to 57 points and 33 goals. Lucas Eshelman had the other Pictou County goal. Eshelman, Nick Hodgson and Brad MacEachern all picked up a pair of assists.

The Scotians led 2-1 after one; tied at three after two before Verge scored his third game-winning goal this year just 41 seconds into the final period.

Ben Goss picked up his 15th win of the season, while Luke Jessop was tagged with the loss.

With the Glace Bay Miners claiming first place, the Scotians and Pirates will now fight for home ice advantage in the upcoming playoffs. The Scotians presently top the Pirates by a single point at 35, but the Pirates have one game in hand.
