ANTIGONISH - The Pictou County atom Subway Selects came away with gold during the Credit Union Female Hockey Challenge in Antigonish this past weekend, winning 12-2 over the Cape Breton Islanders in the final.

Taylor Long earned the game MVP award with a goal and two assists. Ashley MacDonald, Alyssa Fitt, Hayley Nichol, and Sample led the way with two goals apiece, with Petipas, Clarke, and Hayes getting singles. Fitt and Hayes had three assists, DeCoff had two assists, with Madison Sample, Cassie Clarke, and Hickey getting one assist each to complete in the win.

Earlier in the weekend during the round-robin play, the Selects defeated the Halifax Hawks 7-0 on Friday. Keighan DeCoff’s first period goal assisted by Sample became the game-winning goal. Hayley Burke assisted by Taylor Long, Abby Vint and Jenna Hickey scored unassisted tallies completing the scoring in the first. MacDonald, Megan Petipas and Clarke scored singles, with Petipas and Hickey picking up assists. Goaltender Morgan Fitzpatrick making several keys saves to earn the shutout.

In the Selects second game, they defeated the Bedford Blues 7-4. Ashley MacDonald, assisted by Sample, scored in the first. However, the Selects went down 3-1 in the second.

They eventually fought their way back with DeCoff and Hickey scoring unassisted goals late in the second to tie the game. DeCoff scored her second goal early in the third assisted by Taylor Long to take the lead. Two minutes later Hickey scored the eventual game-winning goal unassisted. Emily Hayes and Sample completed the scoring for the Selects. Fitzpatrick earned game MVP by stopping three breakaways in their come from behind win.

In their final round-robin win the Selects defeated the Cape Breton Islanders 4-0 on Saturday to earn a berth in Sunday’s finals. In the first period Hickey scored with an assist to Allie Hood. Early in the second captain Cassie Clarke scored an unassisted marker. The Selects put it away with two goals in the third period with Sample scoring from Fitt and Hayes. Hayley Burke finished the scoring with an unassisted goal of her own.
