PICTOU COUNTY - The Pictou County peewee AA Subway Selects had a 2-0-1 record that got them to the semifinal crossover game on Sunday morning, but that was as close as they would get to gold at the 7th annual Sweetheart Tourney in P.E.I. The Selects began the weekend earning a 2-2 tie with the Dartmouth Whalers in game one on Friday. Sophia Wornell and Brianna Francis scored for Pictou County. Jenna Landry was solid in goal for the Subways.
Pictou County picked up their first win Friday evening with a 3-0 victory over the Western Wind. Francis led the way with a pair of goals, while Camryn Halliday added a single. Leigha MacDonald earned the shutout in goal.
On Saturday, the Selects took on the Capital District Hurricanes of Charlottetown and came up with a 1-0 victory to finish second in the round robin. Sarah MacNeil had the only goal and Landry earned the shutout.
The second place finish got the Subways a trip to the semifinal where they took on the South Conference leading Western Valley Vixens. Pictou County dominated the first half of the game, but couldn't beat the Valley goaltender. Valley scored with just 21 seconds remaining in the second period to open the scoring. The Selects worked hard to try and score the equalizer but with just a minute to go in the period, Western Valley struck again to seal the fate of the Selects. MacDonald took the loss but was solid between the pipes.
"I was very proud of the effort we got from our girls this weekend,” said coach Steve Halliday after the crossover loss. "We did an excellent job defensively all weekend, but we didn't generate as much offence as we would have liked today. Western Valley has a solid team but I'm confident our team has the horses to get the job done with a few minor tweaks."
The Selects take on the Colchester Cyclones this weekend as they start their North Conference playoffs. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Wellness Centre.
