Bantam AA Selects having success in playoffs

PICTOU COUNTY - Three games into the South Conference Female Hockey Federation league playoffs, the Pictou County bantam AA Subway Selects have two wins and a tie.

The local girls defeated the TASA Ducks 3-1 on Saturday in Chester in a penalty-filled game that forced the Selects to play shorthanded for 16 minutes of the 45-minute game. Emilly MacDonald, Madelyn Bourque and Kassidy MacKinnon scored for Pictou County. Assists were marked by Bourque, Amanda Dunning, Annika Mason and MacDonald with two. Brittany Duff was strong in goal, making several key saves.

On Sunday in Pictou, the local squad faced off against the Cole Harbour Wings, with the match ending in a scoreless tie. Despite outplaying their opponents, the Selects were unable to find the back of the net.

In their opening game of the league playoffs on Feb. 24, the Selects defeated the Valley Wild 9-0. Meagan Stewart led the scoring with four goals, with singles by Lena MacDonald, Emilly MacDonald, Madelyn Bourque, Kassidy MacKinnon and Hannah Richards. Assists were recorded by Katelyn Dunn and Emilly MacDonald with three apiece, two for Kaila Reid, and one each for MacKenzie Reid, Lena MacDonald, Brittany Chisholm and Stewart. Netminder Brittany Duff got the shutout.

The Selects finished in first place in regular season play, and will compete in the Bantam AA provincial championships March 22-24.
