NEW GLASGOW - The Weeks Jr.A Crushers have been selected to host the 2013 Maritime Hockey League Entry Draft June 13 – 15.
“The MHL Draft is the kick-off to the 2013/14 hockey season and although training camps do not start until September, the June meetings set the course for the upcoming season.” Derryl Smith, MHL president said.
The weekend begins with League Governor meetings on June 13 and concludes with the draft itself on June 15 at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Midget aged players from all across Atlantic Canada are draft eligible and the draft serves as the cornerstone for teams as they select players who will serve as the future for the MHL teams.
“The MHL draft is the one weekend where all eleven MHL teams get together for league business and working to build their team for 2013/14 season and beyond. The draft itself is an exciting time to draft young players and as well prior years’ drafts have always seen a number of significant trades between the MHL teams, so it will be an entertaining and exciting weekend,” said Wade Taylor, President of the Crushers.
The Crushers are inviting all of their fans and the community to come to the Wellness Centre on Saturday afternoon and be a part of the draft, which begins at 1 p.m.
Jason Malone, Head Coach and General Manager of the Crushers said he is looking forward to the weekend.
“We have a strong nucleus returning for next year and we are looking to build on this and have a team that can win a league championship,” he said. “We look forward to the draft to supplement our roster as well as draft players to secure a bright future for our club.”
The host organizing committee is in the process of finalizing the details for the event, which will include an equipment demonstration from the Crushers equipment supplier, Winnwell Hockey at Rapid Shot and a kid’s road hockey challenge.
