Jenna Leadbetter of the Subway Stingers watches as a batter from the Cardigan, P.E.I. team fouls off a pitch during their opening game of the U-14 Eastern Canadian Girls Softball Championship. The Stingers fell 9-2 in six innings to Cardigan.
STELLARTON – McKayla Symons said nerves got the best of the Subway Stingers U-14 team in the early innings of their opening game of the U-14 Eastern Canadian Girls Softball Championship on Thursday.
Taking on the P.E.I. representative from Cardigan, the Stingers gave up four runs in the top of the first, eventually falling 9-2.
In the bottom half of the inning the Stingers had their first two batters strikeout, with just one hit before the end of the inning.
Cardigan scored two more runs in the second go up 6-0.
“Our coaches were really trying to encourage us and we were trying to encourage each other more to talk more and get into the game,” she said. “We definitely had some nerves because it’s a big tournament, but we started to settle in and will definitely be more settled tomorrow after the first game.”
The Stingers started to turn things around in the third, scoring a pair of runs before a base runner was called out for leading off second base when they weren’t allowed to be. This was the third out, which ended the scoring threat and left two stranded.
Those were the final runs the Stellarton-based team scored as Cardigan went on to score a lone run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to their 9-2 victory in only six innings.
“Tomorrow we just need to be ready to play at the beginning of the game and not the middle,” said Symons. “We’ll have to talk more and give everyone a boost. I think we can play better tomorrow and just need to work on our hitting some because we just started bad in the field, but got a lot better.”
