Some of the girls they instruct understand, others are too young to appreciate, all that Carmen MacDonald and Blayre Turnbull have accomplished in their hockey careers which has led them to play university hockey as well as represent on Canadian national teams.
But both MacDonald and Turnbull hope they were able to help encourage young girls who took part in their hockey school this past week at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
“My dad kind of gave me the idea and we just thought it would be something fun to do while we were both home for the summer,” said Turnbull, who plays for the University of Wisconsin.
She said there is certainly some talent among the group coming up.
“They were all pretty hard workers.”
She said she hopes they ones who took part leave remembering what they learned and keep practicing the drills because they are the same ones that she and Carmen do with their teams at university.
MacDonald, who won gold as a goalie with Canada’s under 18 at the World Championship in 2010 now plays for the St. Lawrence Saints. She said she enjoyed working with the kids this week.
“The goalies actually really listened really well,” she said.
