Skyler Earle practises his pitching by throwing to Nick MacInnis during the New Glasgow mosquito AA Crofter’s Cubs practice on Tuesday night
NEW GLASGOW – Excitement is building for some of New Glasgow’s minor baseball players with the mosquito AA provincial championships just around the corner.
The championship runs Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at the Kinsmen Fields in New Glasgow with the Crofter’s Cubs hosting.
Sam Hickey, a member of the Cubs, said the team has been working hard for the past few weeks to prepare for provincials. He said it’s what he’s been looking forward to all season.
“We’ve been working on our ground balls, pop ups and pitching a lot at practice lately – and our long tosses from the outfield to get players out when they keep running,” said Hickey. “I’m really excited for the weekend because if you win you’re the No. 1 team in Nova Scotia this year, but if you finish below that your season is over.
“It will definitely be the favourite part of our season.”
Over the season both Hickey and his teammate Jayden Hatchard believe the team has improved their hitting the most. They said they’ve improved everything from when they started, but they adjusted their hitting to help them win games.
“What we’ve improved with our hitting is not swinging for the fences every time we’re at the plate,” said Hatchard. “We’re just trying to get contact and get on base every time.”
The pair said that having provincials at home is great for a few reasons. They both like that they’ll be able to sleep at home, but also that they’ll have more fans in the stands than if they went away for provincials.
“It’s good to be here because some family doesn’t come much because some have to come from far away,” said Hickey. “For this I have some more coming to visit because it’s here. It’s exciting to have them come watch. You also get more sleep being at home and in your own bed.”
Action gets underway on Friday with New Glasgow taking on the Stellarton Albions at 6 p.m. on the small Kinsmen field.
The host committee is also holding a silent auction on Friday and most of Saturday during the tournament. Some of the items available for bidding are: a Sidney Crosby autographed puck, Ray Bourque autographed print, Joey MacDonald autographed print, Denis Savard Montreal Canadiens autographed print, Under Armour golf shirt, Orlimar Black Ice driver, and Kelly Gruber and Bill Lee signed baseballs.
