Brandon Thibeau prepares to stop the puck during the Pictou County Weeks Crushers practice on Monday afternoon at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The Crushers are home tonight for their first pre-season game of the year against the Summerside Western Capitals.
NEW GLASGOW – The evaluation process for the Weeks Crushers is far from over.
According to head coach Jason Malone four exhibition games will help the coaching staff make those final decisions.
“We’re a long ways away and we still have to evaluate a lot of guys,” said Malone. “We have four exhibition games this week so that will tell a pretty big tale, but we’ll wait and see where everyone’s at on Sunday.”
The Crushers first pre-season test is tonight against the Summerside Western Capitals at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
Although before camp he said there generally isn’t too much weight put on pre-season games, there were a number of players that surprised them.
“It’s still pretty wide open,” he said. “There were some guys that showed up to camp that we weren’t expecting much out of, but they really opened our eyes, so it’s been a lot harder than we expected.
With one of the biggest positions that Malone is evaluating being goaltending he will use the games to not only give Brandon Thibeau time, but look at his options for their second goalie.
“It will be pretty interesting to see,” said Malone. “We obviously want to give Brandon some minutes too, but Devan (Tremblay) is going to get the start Tuesday night and will probably get the full game. We’ll go from there. I’m not looking a few games ahead, I’m focused on tomorrow night and giving everyone in the lineup an honest look and a good opportunity to make our team.”
Malone said he isn’t concerned about the final result of the exhibition games, although winning is a plus. He said they’re looking for guys that are going to do the little things right and will fit best with their team moving forward.
Admission for the game is $5.
