This week Pictou County’s pro golfer is in action at The Lakes Golf Club hoping to show he belongs.
Brian Affleck returned from PGA Tour Canada Qualifying School in the spring where 40 spots were granted for the Canadian tour. Although Affleck wasn’t one of the 40 who gained a spot he has a chance to prove he belongs with the best Canadian golfers after being selected for one of the sponsor spots at the PGA Tour Canada’s Cape Breton Celtic Classic.
He said he applied the first week of May for the sponsor spot, but didn’t hear until Aug. 28 that he got into the event that runs Sept. 5-8.
“I definitely didn’t forget about the application over the last few months because I was hoping to get in,” he said. “I want to prove I belong here. I knew when I put my resume in that I would have a good chance because I attended qualifying school. That may have given me the upper hand, but either way I’m just excited and looking forward to it.
“I really can’t say enough about the sponsors for choosing me. I’m looking to make most of the opportunity.”
Although his focus this summer has been on teaching instead of playing, Affleck said he’s played three events in the last few weeks in preparation for the event in case he was expected. Round 1 action gets underway on Sept. 5, with cuts being made before Saturday. Only the Top 60 golfers get to play on the weekend.
“I’ve played three tournaments in the past couple of weeks just in case I was selected, but I was definitely planning on it,” said Affleck. “I wanted to be prepared competitively just in case I got in. I came up Friday to get used to the course and after the pro-am on Tuesday I will have played the course five times before tournament.”
Affleck said each time he’s played the course it hasn’t played the same, which has made his practice rounds that much more important.
“It’s one of the few courses I’ve played that every time I’ve played it, it hasn’t been the same at all,” he said. “Every opportunity to be on the course has helped me prepare for the weekend. I’m hoping to be successful and show I fit in with the guys on the tour.”
