NEW GLASGOW – The initial test for the Weeks Crushers went well on Tuesday, but there’s always work to be done.
Evan Carmody, who had two goals, said it felt good to start the season on a positive note with a 5-2 win over the Summerside Western Capitals in exhibition play. He said although they’re happy about the win and the way the team is coming together, there is still work to be done.
“I mean there’s a lot of work ahead of us, but for the most part yea, we’re looking pretty good on paper, but we’ve still got a lot of work to put in,” he said.
“The seasons early, but I guess in our own end, you can always work on that,” said Carmody. “Breaking out we were a little shaky at times, but that will come too once we get into the season.”
The Crushers opened the scoring midway through the first period with a pair of goals within two minutes, one of which being Carmody’s first. He said his goal was just to get his timing back, but the goals added to the first game back.
“Well I just wanted to go out and get my timing back and stuff like that, but there were a couple nice plays by my teammates – it’s nice to get a couple goals to start off the year,” he said.
He added that after being eliminated by the Truro Bearcats in Game 7 of their division semifinal series last year that it was just good to be back around the rink with the team and start building towards their goal this season.
“It’s been awhile, especially with a tough loss in the playoffs, so it’s pretty exciting to get back on the ice with the guys and start off a new season,” said Carmody.
Brandon Parsons added a second period tally for the Crushers with Mitchell Deruelle picking the corner on a break down the right side in the third period to score unassisted. Carmody said all around the team looks good, although they will always need to keep working on things.
“There are a lot of good players here and we’ve been practicing for about a week and a half now so we’re used to playing together in practice,” said Carmody.
The Crushers next preseason game is Thursday night against the Truro Bearcats.
