TATAMAGOUCHE - For five years running, organizers of the Butter Trail Run in Tatamagouche have sold the 5k, 10k and one-mile event on Labour Day weekend based on its breathtaking scenery and on the beauty of the Village of Tatamagouche.

In past years, this was the case. On race day this year however, runners awoke to a dark and stormy morning complete with ominous skies, teeming downpours and thunder and lightning. Runners and walkers who traveled from all regions of Atlantic Canada were not discouraged though; 200 enthusiastic individuals of all ages showed up at the North Shore Recreation Centre on Sept. 1.

By all accounts, everyone enjoyed the atmosphere of fun, competition and yes - beautiful scenery - the event has become known for. From the music of a lone bagpiper soaring through Nelson Park to quirky and motivational sayings posted along the Butter Trail, organizers Keltie Smith and Jennifer Langille try to add touches of fun for participants. Along with promoting running as a fitness activity, the goal of the event is to raise funds for the North Shore Recreation Centre and this year $6,000 has been presented to the board of directors to assist with operational expenses, bringing the event's five-year total donations to over $16,000.

Adding to the excitement of the event, the popular “Heads or Tails” game gave everyone present a chance to win amazing prizes such as the $500 Take It Outside gift card sponsored by Langille Fuels and a Samsung 32” flat screen TV donated by John O’Hearn.

At this year’s event Scotsburn’s Dave MacLennan won the 10k event with a time of 36:04. Kevin Tulloch of New Glasgow finished third at 40:51 and Jim Lays of Stellarton finished fourth at 42:00.

The top female from Pictou County was Heather Hukkala, who finished 17th overall and was the fourth female to finish at 51:05.

In the 5k event the top finisher from Pictou County was Tyler Congdon of New Glasgow at 24:35. Vicki Patton of River John was the top female finisher at 28:51
