Yarmouth outlasts Pictou County in first meeting of the season
NEW GLASGOW – John Mullally’s goal in the second period looked like it would be enough to give the Weeks Crushers their first victory at home this season, but with only six seconds remaining in regulation Kyle Campbell broke the Crushers fan’s hearts.
With an extra attacker on the ice the Yarmouth Mariners forward potted his most important goal so far this season to push the game to overtime. Mullally said he felt the team wasn’t pressuring Yarmouth as much in the third as they had in prior periods.
“I guess so, in the first and second we had the tempo the whole periods and then in the third we came out in the third period and it cost us,” said Mullally.
Heading into overtime the coaching staff just told the team to settle down, keep it simple and make sure they have their man according to Mullally. The Crushers did a good job of that as overtime solved nothing, sending the game to a shootout.
“We have confidence in (Brandon) Thibeau that he can stop the puck,” said Mullally. “I mean they had a few guys that squeaked one by, but we have confidence in our players that are going to go out and try and score. It just didn’t go our way tonight.”
Andrew Graham shot first for the Crushers, putting the puck through Chase Gaudet’s five-hole to give Pictou County the advantage.
Shooting next for Yarmouth, Colin Campbell put the puck under Thibeau’s left arm to match the Crushers.
David Stephens was inches from putting the Crushers ahead on the next shot with Gaudet missing a poke-check, but Stephens hit his pad.
Morgan Messenger scored next for the Mariners, the eventual game-winning goal, putting the puck through Thibeau’s five-hole.
The final shooter, Mitchell Deruelle was turned aside by Gaudet as the Mariners pushed their win streak to three games.
Scoring in regulation for the Crushers was Mullally with two and Brandon Parsons with one.
Braden Mercier and Messenger scored in the first period for Yarmouth.
The Weeks Crushers next game is Sunday on the road against the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks.
“We have to come to practice on Saturday and bear down, do the little things, some systems work,” he said. “It might only be the second game of the season, but we need to get the structure of the team.”
