St. FX forward Michael Kirkpatrick looks for an open man as St. Thomas Tommies defenceman Marc-Andre Levesque takes away his shooting lane during AUS exhibition action Friday night at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. St. FX defeated St. Thomas 4-1
Rob Slaney led St. FX with a goal and an assist, while Drew Owsley picked up the win in goal with 25 saves in exhibition at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
St. FX’s Blake Gal opened the scoring just 2:33 into the first period as his shot from the point found it’s way through a crowd in front of Alex St. Arnaud and into the back of the net.
RD Chisholm padded the X-Men lead, tapping the puck into the yawning goal after St. Arnaud’s rebound bounced perfectly to his stick. The Tommies trailed 2-0 after one period.
In the second period St. Arnaud made two costly mistakes, which St. FX capitalized on. First, Cole Grbavac caught him off balance as he tried to regain his positioning to put St. FX up 3-0. Slaney scored on an open net at the 10:28 mark with St. Arnaud trying to get back in the crease after playing the puck.
He was pulled after that goal, making way for Jonathan Groenheyde, who didn’t allow a goal for the final 29:32 of the game.
The X-Men took a 4-0 lead into the third.
Although it made little difference in the end result of the game, St. Thomas had a strong power play in the third, with Yuri Cheremetiev eventually capitalizing 7:21 into the frame.
St. Arnaud made 15 saves, while Groenheyde made nine.
