TRENTON – After having to cancel their scheduled home opener last weekend due to an issue at the Trenton Rink, the Pictou County Scotians will be home for the first time this Sunday.
Although it’s their first home game, they’ve played two games on the road thus far, losing both 5-4. They were both learning experiences according to head coach Chris Stewart.
“We’re pleased offensively I think and we’ve got the right line combinations, but we’re still trying to make some adjustments on the blue line,” said Stewart. “We’ve put players in defensive roles that they probably aren’t used to, but for the short term we seem to be getting by.”
Stewart said that right now they’re looking to sign some defencemen, but haven’t found anyone yet. He said that they are looking for some more talent on their blue line, specifically for their first or second line of defence, although they have played their opening games with only five defencemen.
Although it isn’t ideal, he’s confident they can still win hockey games in the short term.
“I think we’re in a position right now that the roster we have is capable of winning in this league,” he said. “We’ve got a few games against the other division in the short term, so I think we can compete fairly well, but to bring us to the level we need to be at we need to make some roster adjustments. Short term, we’re confident we can put together a team that is capable of winning.”
Some of the players Stewart referred to were Brandon Verge, Lucas Eshleman and Bradley MacEachern, who were league leaders in scoring last year. He also said having Ben Goss back between the pipes will be crucial.
“We’ve got a core group of guys that knows what needs to be done in this league to be successful, so we’ll rely on those guys,” said Stewart. “Our top two lines are veterans in this league so they’ll know what the competition is out there and the new guys we have will learn from the coaching staff and those guys.”
