Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (29) celebrates his goal during the second period an NHL hockey game against the Washington Capitals, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, in Washington.
Nathan MacKinnon has his first NHL goal.
The 18-year-old Cole Harbour hockey standout and former star of the Halifax Mooseheads scored on the power play Saturday night against the host Washington Capitals for his first goal of the season in his fifth NHL game.
MacKinnon scored by firing a quick shot past Capitals netminder Michal Neuvirth from in close at 17:41 of the second period to give Colorado a 3-0 lead.
After he scored, MacKinnon celebrated by skating to the corner and jumping into the glass.
MacKinnon, the top-overall pick in last June’s NHL draft, added a third-period assist as the Avalanche won 5-1 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The two-point night gives MacKinnon six points, tops on Colorado.
An interesting side note: on the same night MacKinnon netted his first NHL goal, fellow Cole Harbour hockey star Sidney Crosby had three goals and an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4.
All in all, a great night for Cole Harbour hockey.
