ANTIGONISH - After suffering a loss to Avery’s Valley Wild, the Antigonish midget AA Bulldogs came back to defeat the Wild 3-2 in a double-header on Saturday in Kingston.
Cassidy Sponagle scored the lone goal unassisted in the first game on a shot from the blue line, which resulted in an 8-1 final score.
In the second game, no scoring occurred until the second period, when Cynthia MacDonald found the back of the net on a breakaway pass from Katelyn Dunn of New Glasgow. The Wild tied up the score, and then the Bulldogs answered with another by MacDonald to end the second period with a score of 2-1.
The Wild scored again in the third period to once again tie it up, but Antigonish prevailed, with a goal by Dunn, who received the pass from Silvius in the neutral zone, carried it into the Valley’s end, and cut to the net. The shot was blocked by the Wild’s goalie, but then Dunn put her own rebound into the net.
Nicole Grace was strong in nets, blocking many shots from the Wild.
Female AA teams in the province are now regionalized, with Antigonish and Pictou County coming together to form teams. The midget AA Bulldogs have three Pictou County players – Gena Cyr, Brooke MacVicar and Dunn.
