NEW GLASGOW – Twenty-four female hockey teams in four different divisions will be vying for the Subway Cup this weekend in Pictou County.
The Pictou County Female Hockey Association is hosting its first ever all female tournament to showcase some of the top female teams in the Maritimes.
“The hockey skill that will be displayed at this tournament will surprise many people,” said PCFHA President Sueann Musick. “Pictou County has prided itself on having skilled female hockey players, but there are teams coming from across the Maritimes who also have accomplished female hockey programs. We expect the hockey to be fast and competitive at all levels.”
The Subway Selects will be hosting four divisions, atom AA, peewee AA, bantam AA and midget A.
The tournament will open Friday afternoon at both the Pictou County Wellness Centre and Hector Arena in Pictou with games being played in both rinks all day Saturday. Crossover and championship games will be held Sunday at the Wellness Centre.
“We are expecting competitive games to be held in every division, leading up to and including the championship games,” said Musick. “If you have never seen a female hockey game before, you know you will walk out of the rink with a new appreciation for this sport.”
The Subway Cup is a major fundraiser for the Pictou County Female Hockey Association that is icing eight female teams this year from novice to midget. In addition to the games, a silent auction and a cumulative 50/50 draw will take place on the weekend. Admission fees of $5 for one day and $10 for a weekend pass will be charged at the door.
“We are thrilled our program is continuing to grow and more girls are playing hockey on female teams, but with growth comes new expenses,” said Musick. “Ice rentals increase, jerseys need to be purchased and coaching courses need to be updated. We need to continue to invest money in all our divisions in order to provide our girls with quality program.”
The local female program is fortunate to its sponsor Subway on board for the past six years and its investment Subway Selects’ name well known in the world of female hockey, she added.
