Walser scores game winner, Canada advances at Spengler Cup

DAVOS, Switzerland — New Glasgow’s Derrick Walser scored the eventual game-winning goal on Sunday as Canada advanced to the semifinals at the Spengler Cup with a 6-3 over the Rochester Americans.

Walser’s second game-winning goal of the tournament came 6:06 into the second period to put Canada up 4-1 at that point in the contest.

Byron Ritchie and Jacob Micflikier each scored twice for Canada, with Alexandre Giroux rounding out their scoring.

Canada will play Swiss club HC Geneve-Servette in Monday’s semifinal.

Alexander Hutchings, Dan Catenacci and Joel Armia scored for Rochester, which is the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Host HC Davos will face CSKA Moscow in the other semifinal. Moscow beat HC Vitkovice Steel 3-2 on Sunday to advance.
